A Colorado Springs woman is in jail after police say she killed her own mother.
11 News spoke to a family member who explained what happened leading up to the alleged murder.
Mara Jefferson said her sister is the suspect, 57-year old Rae Lena Stanley, and the victim is her mother, Charlas "June" Stanley.
Jefferson said she remembers her mother and sister's relationship was strained for years.
"As my sister's mental stability started getting worse [the relationship was] very unhealthy. My mom blamed herself for Rae's mental problems," she said.
Jefferson said her sister Rae suffers from schizophrenia and that she had left Cedar Springs Mental Hospital about a week and a half ago and was staying with her mother.
"[Charlas] loved her family, she loved her family dearly. She loved her kids," said Jefferson.
She said that night Charlas and Rae were fighting about family issues.
"I guess my mom was afraid and agreed to let Rae stay one more night but then the next day she had to go," said Jefferson.
Before that could happen, police say Stanley killed her own mother in her home.
"The took a lot of knives, bloody knives ... God knows I forgive her for what she did, but I no longer have a sister," Jefferson said.
Rae Stanley was arrested and is now facing First Degree Murder charges.
Officers found the suspect walking down the roadway near the home on Curtis Road just before 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
They say Stanley was saying things that made them concerned and when they arrived at the house that's when officers found Charlas Stanley dead.
