Inmates Cast Ballots on Election Day

These voters in Washington are all dressed alike -- orange jumpsuits and white shoes. And when they finished voting, they go back to their cell block.

Nearly 90 inmates in the D.C. Jail cast absentee ballots this year. The city's board of elections and the D.C. Jail coordinated the voting effort.

Most states don't actively help inmates vote, but there are exceptions.

Jails in San Francisco register inmates to vote and help with absentee ballots. In Maine and Vermont, prisoners never lose the ability to vote.
