BOULDER, Colo. (AP) -- A Boulder District Court judge has sentenced a 58-year-old man to 40 years in prison for the beating and strangulation death of his girlfriend.

George Ruibal was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Dana Pechin in 2007.

Authorities said Pechin was beaten so badly that investigators initially believed she had been in an automobile accident.

According to the Longmont Times-Call, Judge Thomas Mulvahill told Ruibal on Thursday that the lengthy prison term could mean life in prison.
