Saturday is Armed Forces Day across the country, but as people celebrate the work military men and women do everyday, top military leaders say the War On Terror is far from over.
More troops will be heading to Afghanistan in the coming months. Some of them may be deployed from Ft. Carson. General David Petraeus said more troops are needed to keep terrorist groups from gaining power.
As thousands of 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division troops from Fort Carson come home over the next few days, many other soldiers will soon be deployed.
"We cannot allow Afghanistan to once again become a sanctuary and safe haven for transnational extremists like al-Qaeda, as it was before the conduct of the 9-11 attacks, attacks that were planned in Kandahar, the area in which we're now focusing as the campaign moves forward," said Gen. David Petraeus. He says U.S. and NATO troops should have the right mix of resources to support Afghan military and police forces.
"We already have an army that is far more relevant to the challenges that we're facing," said General George Casey, U.S. Army Chief of Staff. General Casey recently spoke at the Broadmoor about Fort Carson. He also said even though the Army has a lot of work to do, it's already accomplished so much. "We were able to meet the increased demand in Afghanistan. Our portion of that was about 20,000,” he said. “Without having to increase the time that soldiers are deployed. And still continue to build time that they're at home."
General Casey says he hopes to give our soldiers more time home, in between deployments. A new study reports soldiers need 2 to 3 years to recover between combat deployments. Over the last few years many Fort Carson soldiers were only getting about a year between deployments.
Armed Forced Day pays tribute to men and women who serve the United States' Armed Forces. There used to be separate Army, Navy and Air Force days but in 1949 Armed Forced Day was created to replace those.
