New Laws Go Into Effect Sunday

Children and teens on motorcycles will have to start wearing helmets under a new law that takes effect Sunday.

Violators will be subject to a $125 fine.

48 other states already require those 18 and under to wear helmets. Two previous attempts to add Colorado to the list in the 1990s failed.

Another law taking effect Sunday is one that will double the cost of specialty license plates to $50. Basic driver's license fees will also go up about $5 to $20.40

The extra money will pay to open three more motor vehicle offices in the metro area and hire 25 more workers for existing offices across the state.

Everyone should have to wear a helmet, plain and simple. This is another classic case of "do what we say, not as we do."
