The wife of the soldier accused of killing civilians in Afghanistan has spoken out about her husband.
Karilyn Bales says her husband, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, felt drawn to the Army after 9/11 by a sense of duty to protect his family, friends and country. She says he just wanted to do his part.
Karilyn says the accusations her husband faces are unbelievable.
"He loves children, he's like a big kid himself," she said. "I have no idea what happened, but he would not...he loves children, and he would not do that."
She says she has spoken with her husband twice since his detainment, reaffirming their love for each other in the conversations.
Bales has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder, six counts of attempted murder, and six counts of aggravated assault and other violations of military law. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
