Its a monumental indication of looming Iraqi control, as the U.S. enters its final weeks in Iraq before almost total drawdown.
Vice President Joe Biden formally signed over Camp Victory--a former palace built by Saddam Hussein--to Iraqi forces Friday morning. The complex was used as a country club for Baghdad elite during Hussein's reign.
At its height, the sprawling base, obtained nine years ago by soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division, was home to 46,000 people.
Biden thanked U.S. and Iraqi troops for their sacrifices in a ceremony. The U.S. will transfer full control to the Iraqis at the end of December.
