US General: We Hacked The Enemy In Afghanistan

(AP) - A senior U.S. Marine says he's carried out cyberattacks on Afghan targets, an unusually explicit acknowledgment of electronic warfare that has usually remained hidden.

Lt. Gen. Richard P. Mills told a recent conference in Baltimore that his forces had hacked into opponents' networks "with great impact" in 2010.

At the time, Mills was in charge of international forces in southwestern Afghanistan, an area that includes the restive province of Helmand.

Few other details of the U.S. military's electronic operations were divulged, but experts say the very mention of U.S. cyberattacks is unusual.

James Lewis of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies says it is the most explicit public reference to cyberattacks he had heard of.
