Many Americans have struggled to hold on to jobs as companies lay off workers. Many military families may soon face that same reality.

U.S. officials say as many as 24,000 enlisted Army personnel and 5,000 Army officers across the country could be laid off over the next five years, a 14 percent reduction.

The cuts are driven in part by the Pentagon budget plan, as well as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars winding down.

The Marines are also looking at a reduction of 20,000, though the Pentagon has indicated that number should primarily come from retirement.

Some in Congress say they are outraged at the idea that veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan could be laid off after serving multiple tours of duty.

"Telling a well-performing combat veteran just back from war that he is getting kicked out of the Army would represent a breach of faith between our country and those who have deployed to keep us safe," Sen. Kelly Ayotte said. "I worry about the demoralizing effect giving pink slips to our warfighters could have throughout the entire all-volunteer force."
