Soldier's Bench Memorial Vandalized

Friends who built a memorial bench honoring a Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife who were killed after apparently surprising a burglar in their home in January are taking it down after it was vandalized.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Friends who built a memorial bench honoring a Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife who were killed after apparently surprising a burglar in their home in January are taking it down after it was vandalized.

The memorial to David and Whitney Dunlap was carried up the Manitou Springs Incline to honor the couple. It was ordered removed because the U.S. Forest Service doesn't allow memorials on national forest land. His friends now agree it's time to move it.

According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, someone carved obscenities, marred Dunlap's picture, removed pieces off the bench and tried to throw them down the mountainside. No motive for the vandalism was given.
