An escaped inmate from Peterson Air Force Base was captured in western El Paso County Friday afternoon.
According to Peterson, Senior Airman Herbert Mullens III, 23, was found near the Teller County line at 12:50 p.m. They found him after Teller County Dispatchers received reports from people who spotted him near Rampart Range Road and Loy Creek Road.
Mullens slipped away while en route to the Teller County Jail after attending a pretrial confinement hearing on Peterson Air Force Base. Mullens escaped custody during a bathroom break in Woodland Park at the McDonalds. Police received a tip that Mullens had been seen at the town Walmart, but a a search of the store and review of surveillance video were futile.
At the time of his escape, Mullens was with two members of the 21st Space Wing, who were responsible for transporting him back to jail.
He was discovered off Loy Creek Road, near Rampart Road, riding on a 4-wheel ATV. It is unknown if that ATV was stolen.
The people who recognized him said he was going door-to-door asking for someone to help him rent a car, and claimed he became lost looking for his brother's house.
He is once again in military custody.
Mullens was being held in pretrial confinement since April 5 due to pending charges of driving while intoxicated, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
