An airman based out of Peterson Air Force Base was killed in Afghanistan Friday.
The Department of Defense identified him as 28-year-old Capt. David Lyon. Lyon was assigned to the 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron out of Peterson.
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Capt. Lyon. The loss of life pains our team deeply. We are poised to assist his family and friends in their time of need and have support services in place to facilitate those needs," Col. John Shaw, 21st Space Wing commander, said in a statement Saturday.
Lyon sustained fatal injuries when his vehicle was attacked with an IED. The five-year Air Force veteran was nearing the end of a year-long deployment in Afghanistan, where he was performing a combat advisory mission with Afghan National Army Commandos, among other duties.
Lyon was scheduled to return to the U.S. in February.
Originally of Sandpoint, Idaho, Lyon first came to Colorado Springs to attend the Air Force Academy. He was stationed at Peterson in 2010.
