A new plan could bring troops in Afghanistan home sooner.

The admiral in charge of U.S. special operations wants to replace thousands of troops with small elite teams. Roughly 2,000 elite troops would pair up with Afghan forces to carry out raids and help withstand attacks by the Taliban, likely emboldened as U.S. troops largely withdraw.

About 4,000 special forces would also be used to help secure the countryside.

If approved by the administration, the small unit structure could become the enduring force Afghan officials this week said they need.

The Pentagon asked top officials to develop options to present to the White House after NATO allies decide how many troops to keep in Afghanistan.
