New Afghan War Plan Could Bring Troops Home Sooner

A new plan could bring troops in Afghanistan home sooner.

The admiral in charge of U.S. special operations wants to replace thousands of troops with small elite teams. Roughly 2,000 elite troops would pair up with Afghan forces to carry out raids and help withstand attacks by the Taliban, likely emboldened as U.S. troops largely withdraw.

About 4,000 special forces would also be used to help secure the countryside.

If approved by the administration, the small unit structure could become the enduring force Afghan officials this week said they need.

The Pentagon asked top officials to develop options to present to the White House after NATO allies decide how many troops to keep in Afghanistan.

I say we need to just get out of there - totally. Karzi has said he would fight against our troops there and the people of Afghanistan no longer look upon us as being a liberating force against the Taliban, but as an occupying power in their country. I wouldn't want to be over there as a "paired team member" with the Afghan military either. Right now, out troops are confined to their compounds unless out on patrol or at their desks in secured offices. I wouldn't turn my back on our Afghan "allies" for an instant and would watch them like a hawk, with weapon in hand, when out in front of me. Removing the bulk of our forces frees them up for the next "war" which could be with Syria or Iran. I would bet we hit Iran first - in yet another undeclared war, under unconstitutional authorization by the U.N.
