An attempt to show a friend how safe his gun was has left a Navy SEAL on life support, according to San Diego police.
The sailor placed the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, mistakenly believing the gun was unloaded.
Police say the serviceman and his female friend had been drinking prior to the accident. He reportedly started showing off his 9 mm handgun, trying to get his friend to hold it. When she declined, he put it to his head and pulled the trigger to show how harmless handling the gun was.
The gun went off.
The serviceman, who recently graduated from the Navy's Sea, Air and Land Teams, is on life support at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.
