NATO says one of its service members has been killed in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan.

The alliance says the service member died on Friday -- the fifth to be killed that day in attacks around the country.

NATO's statement on Saturday provided no further details or the nationalities of those killed.

The deaths raise the number of international troops killed in September to 12. More than 400 members of the international military coalition have died do far this year.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization = part of the U.N. Notice the reference to service personnel is now "their" service members. Chances are these latest casualties are Americans and the last time I was aware, our military oath of enlistment is to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. There is no mention in that oath of service to or allegiance to an international coalition.
