The family of slain soldier Sgt. Kimberly Walker put up a pair of SpongeBob SquarePants headstones, but the Springs Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati says they’ve got to go.
In February, Sgt. Walker was found dead inside a room at the hotel formerly known as the Crowne Plaza, near South Circle and I-25. Her boyfriend Montrell Mayo, also a Fort Carson soldier, has been charged with first degree murder in connection to her death.
According to WLWT, a Cincinnati TV station, Sgt. Walker’s mom said her daughter loved the cartoon character and was even buried with SpongeBob in her casket.
They say, month after Sgt. Walker’s death, the family ordered two 7,000-pound SpongeBob SquarePants monuments, costing more than $13,000 each. One for Sgt. Walker, the other for her twin sister, Kara who is currently serving in the Navy.
The family received the approval to erect the SpongeBob monuments, signed the contracts, started the design and paid 10 percent of the price upfront. The monuments were delivered this month, but one day after they were put in, a cemetery said they didn’t fit the guidelines and had to be removed.
In a statement, Spring Grove Cemetery said they regret the issues involving the monuments and the family it affects. They said it was an employee who made a “serious error in judgment” and would work to find a solution at their expense.
