COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- A 21-year-old Colorado Springs woman has been sentenced to six years in prison for failing to get help after her husband inflicted fatal injuries on their infant daughter.
District Judge Robin Chittum sentenced Lakeria Shazarae Grant on Friday, saying she should have recognized that 2-month-old Harmone'e Elam had been gravely injured.
Prosecutors say Harmone'e was severely beaten in December 2011 by Grant's husband, then-Fort Carson soldier Roderick Elam. The couple was accused of waiting six hours to summon help, by which time the infant was not breathing.
Published reports say an autopsy found she had suffered severe brain injuries and a lacerated liver.
Elam was convicted in January and has been sentenced to 32 years in prison.
