First lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, were at Fountain-Fort Carson High School Thursday morning to showcase communities, businesses and nonprofits that support military families.
The Fountain-Fort Carson High School event is part of the National Math and Science Initiative, which is aimed at helping military families. The school will now offer more advanced placement math and science classes. "This is important because in addition to stretching your minds, it's going to make you more competitive for college admissions," said Mrs. Obama.
The first lady told the crowd that she knows that the lives of Colorado students with parents in the military aren't easy. She told hundreds of teens at Fountain-Fort Carson High School, "If you can get through this, you can get through anything."
Students tell 11 News meeting the first lady was an incredible opportunity. "I was just excited to meet her and give her a hug and shake her hand. She's awesome," said student Kaylina Droke.
The motorcade for the first lady and Biden made its way down the interstate shortly after 9 a.m. For any drivers in the area who saw the many police cars driving at that time, or see the same sight later in the day, the police cars were just there for the motorcade.
Security was very tight at the school. Officials brought in several metal detectors, and Colorado Springs Police had K-9 units with them.
Obama and Biden, wife of the vice president, visited families at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and in San Antonio before heading to Denver and Coors Field.
At Coors Field, Jessica Simpson performed for military families and the Colorado Rockies' game against the Mets at Citi Field in New York was shown on the jumbo TV screen. The Air Force Academy baseball team also practiced with military children.
