Staff Sgt. Robert B. Cowdrey, a La Junta native, was killed in Afghanistan on Thursday.

The Department of Defense says Cowdrey was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigate, 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg. He was a flight medic, deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Cowdrey, 39, was known as "Brian" to his friends. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Cowdrey, and three sons, Justin, Charles and Daniel.

The DOD did not release details of how he was killed, saying only that he died “from injuries suffered during combat operations.”

Cowdrey had served through four deployments and his career awards include the Bronze Star Medal, three Air Medals, two Army Commendation Medals for valor and three Army Commendation Medals.

This was written to a Mrs. Bixby in Boston, Massachusetts "Dear Madam: I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant-General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.” Yours very sincerely and respectfully, Abraham Lincoln May our Heavenly Father comfort Staff Sgt. Cowdrey's loved ones.

I worked with him at 3-82, and he exemplified professionalism in an NCO. He will be missed.

God Bless and God Speed, Brian. Your dedication and service won't be forgotten and me and my family are praying for yours. My kids have heard about your sacrifice and how heroes like you make their life of freedoms possible. La Junta lost one of it's sons Thursday, but we won't forget what you gave for us and your bravery and life are an inspiration. Thank you.
