Gitmo Commander Seeks New Limits On Lawyers

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Lawyers for five Guantanamo prisoners charged in the Sept. 11 attacks say the prison commander is seeking to impose new rules that would violate attorney-client privilege.

The lawyers say in a memo that changes proposed by Navy rear Adm. David Woods would violate the prisoners' constitutional right to counsel. The new rules would require legal mail to be submitted to a security review. The arraignment in the Sept. 11 case is expected in 2012.

Lawyers received a 27-page draft of Woods' order on Dec. 22. They were told to sign an agreement to abide by the rules within 48 hours. Instead, they protested in a memo obtained by The Associated Press. A spokeswoman said Woods was not immediately available Tuesday for comment.
