DENVER (AP) -- A top officer in the Global Positioning System program says the Pentagon's post-Iraq, post-Afghanistan strategy will provide sufficient funding for GPS.
Air Force Col. Bernard Gruber said Tuesday GPS has strong support from military leaders. Gruber heads the Air Force GPS Directorate.
The Pentagon said last month it would slow spending growth but said funding for the new GPS satellites would be protected.
The 2012 budget includes $1.5 billion for developing and purchasing GPS satellites and control systems.
Gruber was in Denver for the opening of a Lockheed Martin facility where at least four new GPS satellites will be built under contracts worth $1.7 billion. The first launche is in 2014.
GPS data is used in weapons, banking, transportation and agriculture. Lockheed Martin estimates GPS has 1 billion users daily.
