The Department of Defense has announced that 3,000 soldiers from Fort Carson will be rotated to Afghanistan this spring. 1,200 other soldiers from two other units are also included in the plan.

Fort Carson previously announced that 3,000 soldiers of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division would be going to Afghanistan. A color-casing ceremony was held in anticipation of that departure. The 4th BCT will be tasked with training and developing Afghan security forces during the nine-month deployment.

The DOD's announcement clarified that 500 soldiers from the V Corps Headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany and 700 from the 1st Infantry Division Headquarters in Fort Riley, Kansas will also be included.

In addition, Fort Carson has confirmed that soldiers of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team will be included in a newly announced plan for shifting from a combat mission in Afghanistan to one focused on training and advising. The Army has identified five brigades, as well as an Army reserve organization, that will be reconfigured and sent to Afghanistan between April and August.

Those brigades will be sent with fewer than half its assigned number of soldiers and will comprise only officers and senior non-commissioned officers, along with a contingent of Defense Department civilians. Once in Afghanistan they will operate in 18-person teams in a train-and-advise role.

The other brigades are based in Kentucky, Georgia, Texas and Louisiana.
