Luis Serrano
A Fort Carson soldier has drowned in Florida during a training week. According to Fort Carson, the accident is under investigation.
Tampa CBS affiliate WTSP reports that Sgt. Luis Serrano, 36, walked off a dock behind his hotel at 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Pinellas County deputies say Serrano, who was reportedly drunk, missed a turn on the dock and instead continued walking straight ahead, falling into the water.
Serrano is a native of Puerto Rico who joined the Army in 2000. He has been with the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) since November 2011, and was assigned to his unit's Chemical Reconnaissance Detachment. A season vet, he was deployed to Iraq three times and once to Djibouti.
During his service, Serrano received numerous awards, including the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement medal.
A witness, who called 911 after seeing Serrano fall in, tried to assist him, but he was unresponsive. Serrano's body was retrieved by rescue responders at 6 a.m.
Serrano is survived by his wife Jocelyn, and their two sons D'Angelo and Davin.
