The mother of a Fort Carson soldier killed in Afghanistan says her son was able to see his newborn child before he died.
Sgt. Allen R. McKenna, 28, deployed to Afghanistan Sept. 6, but was able to come home in December when his wife gave birth to his youngest child, Waylon.
McKenna, of Oklahoma, died in the Kandahar province Tuesday of unspecified causes. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Carson.
McKenna joined the Army in September 2004. Prior to September's deployment, he had been deployed to Afghanistan from March 2009 to March 2010.
His decorations included the Army Commendation Medal twice and the Army Achievement Medal.
His mother, Connie Mitchell, says McKenna loved the outdoors, his family and military life.
