LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- A former Army soldier has been sentenced to a year in prison after failing to register as a sex offender as required after his conviction in Colorado in 2009.

A news release from the U.S. Attorney's office Friday said that 29-year-old Richard Michael Nieves, who in March pleaded guilty of failing to register, was sentenced Friday.

In 2009, Nieves was convicted of possessing child pornography while stationed in Fort Carson, Colo., and sentenced to four months. Because of the conviction, he was required to register as a sex offender.

In 2011, after moving to New York from Abilene, where he'd worked for a year, Nieves failed to update Texas officials of his move and to register in New York.

Nieves was ordered to surrender to prison officials June 22.
