NORAD announced the appointment Tuesday.

Parent replaces Lt. Gen. Tom Lawson, who was named chief of Canada's Defense Staff last month.

Parent's previous position was commander of 1 Canadian Air Division.

NORAD is a U.S.-Canadian command responsible for defending the skies over both countries. It also monitors sea traffic approaching their shores. Its headquarters are at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.
