The Air Force Academy says federal budget cuts are requiring them to make some changes in gate security in order to keep the installation safe.
The changes come as the Air Force looks to reduce the number of uniformed airmen by 25,000. As a result of those reductions, 14 members of the 10th Security Forces Squadron are looking to leave the Air Force.
The reduction in security personnel has necessitated changes in when visitors can enter the AFA and when certain gates will be operational. Those changes take effect July 1.
How visitors will be affected:
Visitors can access the AFA through the north gate between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Right now the hours are 8:00 a.m. to 6:00p.m. The AFA says the new hours coincide with the hours of operation for the visitor's center and the chapel.
How DOD card holders will be affected:
The north gate will no longer be open until 1:30 a.m. on weekends. Anyone coming or going from the base will need to use the south gate after 10:00 p.m. The north gate will be open 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
