Updated: 05/14/2013 - I'm still focused on meeting my goal of doing a pull-up. And I'm almost there! But I'm always getting this question:
Starting Monday, the Colorado Springs Fire Department will start using wood chips for erosion and flooding control around the Mountain Shadows burn area.
Hundreds of Air Force Academy cadets and District 20 volunteers cleared out several tons of dry brush and trees there Sunday. For nearly nine hours, the volunteers helped homeowners cut, gather and haul piles of brush from more than 140 homes.
"They like getting dirty...the Academy is there because we have academics, athletics and training, but every now and then they're teenagers, 21-22 years old, and getting out there...getting dirty...getting black ash all over their faces and helping their community, it's a great thing," Col. Marty France told 11 News.
The group collected roughly 15-20 tons of dry, burned trees.
