A memorial service was held Wednesday on the Mountain Post for a fallen soldier from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4 Infantry Division.
Specialist Darrell Lamar Fernandez died in a military vehicle accident in Iraq while serving Operation Iraqi Freedom on January 31. SPC Fernandez, 24, was assigned to the 204th Brigade Support Battalion, Forward Support Company, 1st Regiment, 67th Armor Battalion.
Over his eight years of service, SPC Fernandez was honored with the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Friends, family and fellow soldiers commemorated his life and service in the Army at Fort Carson's Soldiers' Memorial Chapel Wednesday at 10 a.m. The memorial for SPC Fernandez included a traditional roll call, a rifle squad salute and a final tribute with the playing of Taps.
SPC Fernandez was a native of New Mexico. He was survived by his wife, Katrina and his parents, Darrell Fernandez Sr. and Mrs. Susie Smith.
