A Fort Carson soldier was honored Friday for helping save the life of an Air Force Academy cadet.

Sergeant First Class Jesus Rodriguez was at the Garden of the Gods Park with his family earlier this month when he saw a rock climber fall. Rodriguez used the skills he learned in Army Combat Lifesaver Training to help the injured climber, Cadet 2nd Class Jeff Garrett, until paramedics arrived.

SFC Rodriguez was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his lifesaving efforts.

"I didn't expect to get this," Rodriguez said through his smile.

The Air Force Academy says that Garrett was a triathlon athlete. He is still recovering in the hospital in fair condition.

Dear Mr. Rodriguez, Thank you so much for helping Jeff Garrett. He is my older brother, and my entire family is much indebted to you for your help. Thank you again and may God bless you. Sincerely, M. Garrett
