FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP) -- Three soldiers based at Fort Carson have become U.S. citizens while serving in Afghanistan.

The Army says Pfc. Satoshi Kondo, Pfc. Alberto Vera-Navarro and Spc. Qianqian Liu took an oath of allegiance and became citizens on Friday in a ceremony at Kandahar Air Field.

They are assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, part of Fort Carson's 4th Infantry Division. Their brigade has been in Afghanistan for eight months.

They were among 36 soldiers, Marines and airmen who became citizens in the ceremony.

This is why we need to keep the war on terror going forever. It's a great way for people to enter the country legally.

I thought you had to be a citizen to join the US Armed Forces. Or is it that if your citizenship is in progress they give them a waiver? Either way, it's a big step to pledge your allegiance to a country that you aren't native to and join that country's military. They're brave people. Thank you for serving in our military and congratulations on becoming a US citizen.

Individuals are allowed to enlist without being a citizen, provided they are in the country legally. Commissioned officers are required to be U.S. citizens.
