The State Department says the Syrian government has asked the U.S. to close the American Cultural Center in Damascus immediately and the American School in the capital by Nov. 6.
It says the Syrian Foreign Ministry formally gave the deadlines to a senior U.S. diplomat on Wednesday. The Syrian government said Tuesday it would order both institutions closed in retaliation for a weekend American attack on alleged militants inside Syrian territory.
State Department spokesman Robert Wood says the United States is considering its response to the closures and expects the Syrian government to ensure the security of the two buildings.
