The Pikes Peak region is avoiding some of the economic downturn most of the nation is facing because of the military's building program.

The Gazette reported Sunday that the military construction is the biggest in the region since World War II.

Post planner Terry Burns said every large construction firm in the area is likely to be involved.

Fort Carson alone will add 12,000 troops by 2013, and they need offices and living quarters. More than $2 billion is being spent at the post.
