Was a four-star general wrongfully influenced by an investigator to file charges against a Marine officer in the killing of 24 Iraqis in Haditha?
The prosecution of that officer rests on a military judge's decision, which is expected today.
Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Chessani is the highest ranking officer charged in the case.
The military lawyer who investigated the killings and took Chessani's statement, later became a top legal adviser to the general who ultimately referred the charges against Chessani. The lawyer even sat in on briefings that helped the general decide who to charge.
The general says he never spoke with the lawyer about the incident. Military policy prohibits the lawyer from offering legal advice when he also investigated the case.
