Top brass have been shown the door at the Pentagon.

The Air Force's chief of staff, General Michael Moseley, has been canned along with Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne. Defense Secretary Robert Gates cited two incidents during the past year involving nuclear mix-ups. He blames what he calls "a decline in the Air Force's nuclear mission focus and performance."

One incident involved a B-52 that unwittingly flew cross-country carrying six nuclear-tipped cruise missiles. In the other incident, Taiwan was sent four electrical fuses for ballistic missile warheads instead of some helicopter batteries.

Gates is setting up a task force to find how to improve accountability and control of nuclear weapons within the Air Force. It will be headed by a former defense secretary, James Schlesinger.
