The Department of Defense says a Special Forces soldier from Fort Carson has been killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq.

The Pentagon says 25-year-old Sgt. Frank J. Gasper of Merced, Calif., died Sunday in Najaf, Iraq, when his vehicle was hit by the bomb.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group.

Fort Carson says Gasper enlisted in the Army in October 2002 and was on his third deployment to Iraq. He was a radio operator.

Gasper had been awarded three Army Commendation Medals and two Army Good Conduct Medals.

I was on the that mission with him as were a lot of us. It's been hard because we all loved him so much. He was a great man, and he will be memorialized on our "Fallen but not Forgotten" wall along with a ceremony here on Friday. He was the best friend a guy could have... his posthumous awards are a promotion to Staff Sergeant, the Bronze Star w/ V for Valor, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Purple Heart. We love you, Frank, and you will never be forgotten!
