A driver reportedly lost control on the night of March 14 and rolled a vehicle several times, going off the road and plummeting down an embankment.

The victims have been identified as John Marsicano, 69, of Canon City who died at the scene and Deloris Burns Marsicano, 56, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The crash happened around 9:20 p.m. Friday at mile marker 13 on Shelf Road in Fremont County. Shelf Road runs south of Cripple Creek.

Colorado State Patrol confirms that John Marsicano was the driver. Deloris Burns Marsicano, the passenger, was wearing a seat belt, according to State Patrol. The driver was thrown from the vehicle.

State Patrol says the Subaru was traveling south on Shelf Road when it went off the left side of the road and rolled. There was no other vehicle involved.

Fremont Search and Rescue was called to the scene for a high-angle rescue. The county says the surviving passenger was airlifted via Flight for Life to a hospital.

Shelf Road was closed in both directions for almost 12 hours, and reopened shortly before 9 a.m. March 15.

Shelf Road is closed again in both directions Wednesday as crews worked to retrieve the vehicle. An attempt was initially made Sunday, but the vehicle was too far down and crews had to call off the recovery efforts. The Fremont County Sheriff's Office asked drivers to avoid the area Wednesday during the recovery.
