Storm Ending, Fog Sticks Around Through Commute

Vehicle Crashes Through Backyard

We've got the inside story of a scary close call for one family.

An SUV plowed through their fence and backyard, then crashed back into the street just as quick.

This happened just before 4 p.m. Tuesday on Barnes Road near Iron Horse Trail. That's on the northeast side of Colorado Springs.

Eloisa Hayes still can't believe it happened. She told 11 News she's lucky she moved away from their sliding glass door when she did, because moments later, a driver barreled through their yard and leveled everything on her patio.

"I heard a big noise," Hayes said.

Hayes said she was home alone Tuesday afternoon. Her backyard backs up to Barnes Road.

Colorado Springs police said a 46-year-old man was speeding on Barnes when he crossed over the lanes of traffic, crashed through Hayes' fence, leveled everything on her patio, and then crashed through the same fence again in a different spot. He crossed traffic again before ending up in the median on Barnes.

"I can't believe it, I can't believe it still. If the car comes to turn a little bit over here he comes through this window," Hayes said.

The Hayes family told us this isn't the first time they've seen drivers have problems on this road. They said last week, a driver crashed through the fence on the opposite side of the street.

"I think I have the angel on my side. I think I know it's true," Hayes said.

The Hayes family is hoping others will see this near miss as an example for all drivers to take it slower when traveling these wintry roads.

Police say the driver was ticketed for careless driving and driving too fast for conditions.
