UNITED NATIONS (AP) --The U.N. Security Council has strongly condemned the detention of more than 20 peacekeepers monitoring the cease-fire between Israel and Syria by armed members of the Syrian opposition and demanded their immediate and unconditional release.
Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, the council president, told reporters after reading the press statement Wednesday that armed groups have been showing up in the zone of separation, which has threatened the unarmed U.N. peacekeepers.
He said talks are underway between U.N. officials and the captors.
