A shooting at a rap battle and a State Patrol pursuit are unrelated, Colorado Springs police have confirmed.
Troopers and Springs police had been investigating a possible link between the two incidents since Saturday night, after the vehicle in question crashed south of Castle Rock while attempting to elude authorities shortly after the shooting. Four people in the car were taken into custody, while the driver ran away from the scene. He still remains at large.
Prior to the crash, officers were dispatched to a shopping center on Drennan Road and Academy Boulevard on reports of shots fired. Witnesses told officers that one of the rappers arrived at Pens and Needles Tattoo Shop, where he was immediately assaulted upon exiting his car. One of the suspects pulled out a pistol and fired several times, just missing the victim and other occupants inside his car.
The victim and his companions left before police arrived, and drove to a hospital in Pueblo for treatment on their injuries.
Police found a bumper from a car reported stolen from Denver, and were soon notified by State Patrol that troopers were following the stolen car up I-25. This made authorities think there could be a link between the shooting and stolen car. After interviewing the victim and several witnesses, it was determined there was no connection.
Police say it is unclear why the driver was eluding troopers, though they suspect it may have been because he was driving a stolen car.
The driver has been described as a black man wearing a white tank top with black jeans. Troopers are working with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to locate him.
Charges have not been filed against the four taken into custody.
