A trooper is recovering after being injured while responding to a traffic accident.
State Patrol said the trooper parked his SUV in the eastbound lanes of Highway 6 near mile marker 269 in Gilpin County to stop traffic while a tow truck removed a vehicle that had gone off the road and down an embankment.
That is when David Kaai, 71, of Westminster reportedly lost control as he tried to avoid hitting another vehicle that had stopped for the road block.
Kaai reportedly drove onto the shoulder and hit the trooper's vehicle. The trooper's SUV lurched forward and the trooper was hit with the door frame as he was getting out of the vehicle.
State Patrol said the passenger side of Kaai's SUV hit the left rear of the trooper's SUV.
The trooper was taken to the hospital for moderate injuries and later released.
Kaai is charged with careless driving causing injury and with driving a defective/unsafe vehicle.
