A Colorado mayor has resigned effective immediately a day after she was defeated in the polls.

Trinidad Mayor Bernadette Gonzalez sent an email to city staff Wednesday afternoon announcing her resignation and requesting that the new mayor-elect, Joe Reorda, be appointed immediately.

Reorda won November's race for Mayor against Gonzalez 57 percent to 43 percent.

11 News obtained a copy of that email; in it Gonzalez said, "far too many critical decisions affecting the future of this city are pending and require the immediate attention of a mayor who shall be able to lead the city beyond December 31, 2013."

Anna Ridolfi with the Trinidad City Manager's Office tells 11 News that the email is not being taken as an official resignation, but City Council will be discussing their options in a meeting Wednesday night.
