One woman is dead after a tire malfunction caused her vehicle to roll several times on the interstate.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, a Dodge Durango carrying four occupants was on I-25 just south of Walsenberg, heading southbound, when the tread separated from one of the tires, causing the driver to lose control. Her car spun off the road and rolled multiple times before coming to rest on its top.
All of the people inside were thrown from the car. CSP believes that none were wearing seatbelts.
The 33-year-old driver, Bernadette Scott of Colorado Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene. The three others, 20-year-olds Breanna Ortiz, Viktoria Flores and Tawnya Schaus, were taken to separate hospitals with serious injuries.
The investigation is still ongoing, but at this time CSP believes the tire malfunction was the primary cause of the crash, and do not suspect drugs or alcohol.
