A college student and aspiring nurse was killed after her vehicle went off the highway and rolled Wednesday.

The crash happened shortly before noon five miles north of La Junta on Highway 109.

Investigators said Ashley Abel was driving south when she she crossed over the oncoming lane of traffic and off the other side of the road. The vehicle crashed through a barbed wire fence and continued for about half a mile into an open field before turning suddenly.

Abel was thrown from the vehicle as it then rolled several times. State Patrol said she was not wearing a seat belt.

Her mother Jody Bracy told 11 News Abel was working at a nursing home at the time of her death and was attending classes at Otero Junior College with the hope of one day becoming a nurse. She had graduated high school just last year in the top of her class.

Bracy said her daughter always wore her seat belt, and speculated it may have somehow popped off. This has not been confirmed by State Patrol.

Bracy always believes a medical issue may have led to her daughter losing control just before the accident.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
