It happened Wednesday afternoon at the corner of Platte and Circle near the Citadel Mall in Colorado Springs.
The owner of Short Stop, Ted Vong, tells 11 News he was washing dishes when the Flowerama next door was robbed. He didn't see anything, but says an employee from Flowerarma ran over to his business and told him what happened. She said a man walked into the flower shop, said he had a gun in his pocket, and demanded money. He took the cash and took off.
Vong tells 11 News he chased after the suspect for several blocks, eventually catching up with him. He held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived. Vong says the suspect begged him to shoot him, and even stated he had just drank a gallon of poison.
When police arrived, the suspect reportedly asked police to shoot him and tried to approach one of the officers. An officer tazed him and took him into custody.
The suspect, who has been identified as 50-year-old Michael Bass, was taken to the hospital. Bass reportedly told police he had consumed several harmful substances prior to the alleged robbery.
Police tell 11 News once he is released he will be taken to jail and charged with aggravated robbery.
