We've all seen them -- the blue mailboxes on street corners. But in one southern Colorado city those boxes are disappearing.
Dozens of boxes are being removed in Pueblo and Pueblo West as a cost-cutting measure. The post office says 78 blue mailboxes will be removed from Pueblo County over the next several months, leave one mailbox every half square mile.
Senator Mark Udall is asking the Postal Service to work with the community to ensure that residents who rely on these mailboxes will still have ready access to postal services. Udall and others are concerned that removing these mailboxes may limit access to service for senior citizens, the disabled and those without internet access.
In a statement from his office, Udall called for the Postal Service to "work with the community to analyze where these needs are greatest before removing mailboxes."
