Small Plane Slides Off Runway In Boulder

A pilot walked away uninjured after his plane slid off the runway at Boulder Municipal Airport.

Airport manager Tim Head tells The Daily Camera the pilot, whose name has not been released, had just taken off in his fixed-wing, single-engine Lancair aircraft to return to his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Friday evening when he noticed the bubble canopy was not fully locked into position.

The pilot immediately turned the plane around to land in Boulder, but the unlocked canopy disrupted the airflow over the tiny aircraft, which took a hard landing and slid onto the grass alongside the runway. The plane's landing gear crumpled on impact.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to begin their investigation Monday.
