A driver swerved onto the opposite side of the highway to avoid a couch lying inexplicably in the middle of the highway, and was hit broadside by an oncoming truck.

Both the driver and passenger in the car were killed, while the driver in the truck was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash happened at 6 a.m. Wednesday near Schriever Air Force Base, just east of the intersection of Marksheffel and Highway 94. The deceased were traveling eastbound on Highway 94 when police say they came upon the couch and moved into the westbound lane.

Both victims have been identified as airmen at Schriever. Friday, Schriever released their names: Airman 1st Class Edward Yu and Airman 1st Class Abtron "Tron" O'Neal.

""We want to express our heartfelt condolences to Airman Yu and Airman O'Neal's families and friends, as well as the 3rd Space Operations Squadron family," Col. William Liquori, 50th Space Wing commander, said in a statement. "This is a sad day for the Schriever family. The Air Force appreciates their service and commitment to our country. We will continue to provide assistance to their families. Edward and Tron will be missed."

When the crash was first reported, Liquori issued the following statement at that time:

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the two individuals. The loss of life pains Team Schriever deeply. We will do everything we can to support the family and friends in their time of need."

Officers do not believe speed, alcohol or exhaustion played a role in the crash.

Schriever AFB is planning a memorial service to honor the airmen.
