Two local second graders have been recognized as heroes.

Jovanny Perez and Banessa Casdaneda are students at Midland International Elementary School in Colorado Springs.

They were awarded a certificate of appreciation for rescuing three dogs found abandoned in a bag.

The second graders said it looked like someone left them there on purpose.

"We were sad," Banessa said, "Because we have never seen that happen before."

The kids fed the dogs until they found homes for all three.

The world's largest no-kill animal rescue, North Shore Animal League, made the trip to give them their certificate Thursday.
